Drumming Forward

Music is a living thing —  it is our responsibility as artists to take care of ourselves, mentally, physically and spiritually so that we show up our best and let the music happen.

Timothy Angulo is a drummer and composer whose music follows the lineage of Black musical innovators.

Originally from Berkeley, California, Angulo now calls two coasts home and is currently based in New York City. His teachers include Milford Graves, Michael Carvin, Ndugu Chancler, and Darcy James Argue. A glimpse of his sound can be heard in the score of Starz’s newest hit series Blindspotting. Pitchfork has lauded his “deep pocket drums'' in his collaborative endeavors. By synthesizing sounds from his wide-ranging experiences, Angulo has opened doors for himself to work with renowned artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Reggie Workman, Wallace Roney, Kamasi Washington, Jeff Parker, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Marlena Shaw. He is also a current member of the experimental music group L'Rain.

After an immersion trip to Cuba in his youth, Angulo developed a love of travel and performance. Angulo has wasted no time spreading his music and message performing at festivals such as Umbria Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival, Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In Montreal, Angulo performed alongside Mulatu Astake at the Corona Theatre.   Angulo continued his performances eastward with Charnee Wade at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Shanghai.

Angulo additionally thrives in academia and began his journey as a Fellow at the Brubeck Institute in Stockton, California, a full-ride program that functioned much like an incubator program for Angulo’s rise on the East Coast. While in the program, Angulo joined the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra where he played alongside Wynton Marsalis. Angulo went on to complete his degree at The New School in New York City with a BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Music. While at The New School, Angulo was admitted to the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music where he studied under Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey.

Angulo’s star was noticeable at a young age. In grade school, he received a scholarship to a youth music program formerly known as the Young Musicians Program. He participated in orchestra and jazz band while also privately studying drums and french horn through high school. While in high school, Angulo was inducted into the SF Jazz High School All-Star Band playing with guest artists such as Ravi Coltrane & Melissa Aldana.

As a native of Berkeley, California, it was only natural that his interests also include healing. In childhood, he witnessed the effects that music had on the spirit in church, live performance, and recording and dedicated himself to exploring all kinds of holistic healing. Angulo aims to be a composite of everything that interests him, drawing inspiration from Visual Art, Acupuncture, Literature, Sports, Nature, and Spirituality. His music is heavily influenced by all music of the African Diaspora and Classical Music. Angulo makes a priority of exploring the simplicities, complexities, and beauty of the human experience through music.
